The Department of Child and Family Services was created in 2003 after signing the first childcare agreement with the Ministère de la Famille du Québec. Funds received from the Ministère de la Famille are dispersed to all Cree childcare centres in Eeyou Istchee and used to establish the new department.
Today, a total of 16 childcare facilities serve Cree families throughout Eeyou Istchee with a total of 1,208 childcare spaces. Daily subsidized childcare for each space is offered to parents at $7.55 per day of service on a 5-day week.
