About the Workshop

Traditional food security is a fundamental contributor to the health and well-being of indigenous people and communities. For the Cree of Eeyou Istchee, the hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering way of life is fundamental for the preservation of their health, well-being, culture, and identity. Significant environmental and social changes from development over the last 50 years, in addition to the wide-ranging potential impacts of climate change, has raised concerns on the continuous access and availability to healthy traditional food. Research on traditional food security needs to identify the likely environmental and climate change impacts on key food species and the traditional food system, as well as the adaptation strategies that enable the maintenance of traditional food security in a changing environment and society.

In partnership with the Cree Nation Government and Ouranos, the McGill University Wild Food Inc. research team is holding a workshop to gain a better understanding of the wild food system and value in Eeyou Istchee. Participants are invited to share their knowledge on activities, resources, and conditions that make up the wild food system. This will help inform on adaptions actions and future research needs that will contribute to maintaining or improving traditional food security in Eeyou Istchee.
